For Your New Computer

It's the day after Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring except for the mouse... click, click, click..

Oh yes, a new PC computer for Christmas! Well, there are some pretty important steps you you need to take with your new Windows system to help the longevity of your computer and to prepare for any future problems.

First, setup your wireless or connect wired to the Internet. This is important as you need to download the Windows Updates to be sure your operating system is operating properly.

Next, you need a full backup. Most computers don't come with disks, so it is your responsibility to do a complete backup, one that includes the operating system. This most likely will require several DVD disks.  If you have to purchase some, do it quickly. If, for any reason, your computer system needs to be reinstalled, these disks are critical.  Label them for your specific computer model and put them in a safe place in case they are needed.

Now you can customize your computer.  You can remove any icons on the desktop that you don't need such as links to websites and games.  This is called bloatware and you are free to delete any or all of them off your desktop.  Just right-click and select delete. Some of the games are installed on your system and you can remove unwanted programs by using the “Uninstall Programs” in your control panel.

You can change the sizing of the font size, gadgets and background images in the "Appearance and Personalization" section in the control panel.

Computers don't need screen savers anymore as the screen technology has changed over the years. With the power options, you can have your computer shut down after a certain period of time with no activity. This is configured in the control panel under "Hardware and Sound | Power Options".

It may take a few weeks to tweak your computer to fit your needs, but if you have run the updates and backed up your computer, you have a smooth start.

Funny Little Characters

Ever wonder how to make those cute facebook symbols such as musical notes and hearts on your PC? You can add them to your documents, emails and more if you know the secret. These are special character codes. Although there are different ways to create these, this is a fairly easy keyboard shortcut to what is called the "character map" on your computer. [You can find the character map by clicking on the Microsoft start menu button and typing in "Character Map".] If you’re on a laptop make sure you ‘Num Lock’ is on! The ‘Num Lock’ button is on the top right of your keyboard. Next, hold down ‘alt’ (the one in the bottom left of your keyboard or on either side of the space bar) and type the following on the numeric keyboard (not the top row of numbers): Hold ‘alt’ then type 1 – ☺ Hold ‘alt’ then type 2 – ☻ Hold ‘alt’ then type 3 – ♥ Hold ‘alt’ then type 4 – ♦ Hold ‘alt’ then type 5 – ♣ Hold ‘alt’ then type 6 – ♠ Hold ‘alt’ then type 7 – • Hold ‘alt...

This new up and rising website star has no visible means of support, contains millions of pictures and receives visits from 10 million people in the U.S. each month. It was listed as one of the The 50 Best Websites of 2011 by Time Magazine.  It has received some impressive free media exposure with Reese Witherspoon stating it has "a collection of the most amazing, wonderful craftiness on the earth!" So what is Pinterest?  It has been called a visual bulletin board for the Web. Images are called "Pins" and they can be uploaded or with a small application added to your browser, from websites.  Once something in "pinned" on Pinterest, you can "Repin" to add it your board.  Many of the pins are linked to their original location on the web ( to double click on the full size image), so instructions ...
